Rembau

Historical Background of Rembau

Minangkabau Migration:

   - The Minangkabau people from Sumatra, Indonesia, migrated to  the Malay Peninsula in the 14th and 15th centuries, bringing their customs and matrilineal system (Adat Perpatih).

   - This migration led to the establishment of several Luak (territorial divisions), including Rembau.

Etymology

The name "Rembau" is believed to originate from the local Malay language, but its exact derivation is unclear. Some theories suggest it could be related to words used in local dialects.

Local Legend:

• One theory suggests that “Rembau” is derived from the name of a Sumatran prince, Raden Remba, who was one of the early settlers in the area. The settlement was named “Rembau” in his honor.
